Hurricane season is upon us, and now is the time to prepare your home. Over the years, the CAM team has guided clients through the aftermaths of Tropical Storm Allison and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Harvey. Based on our expertise, planning ahead and completing certain tasks well ahead of potential emergencies will minimize damage to your home and maximize safety for your family. Below we’ve compiled some simple tips to get you started.

  • Trim large shrubs and trees. Remove any insecure large branches.

  • Clear out space for storing patio furniture should a storm approach.

  • Make copies of important documents and store the originals in a safe deposit box at a separate secure location.

  • Locate water, gas, and electrical shut-offs.

  • Create an evacuation plan.

  • Create a storm kit to include basic emergency supplies:

    • Non-perishable food, water, and medications for at least three days

    • Battery-powered radio and/or a NOAA Weather receiver

    • Flashlight

    • Extra batteries

    • First aid kit

    • Cash

    • Hand sanitizer

    • Whistle

    • Dust masks, plastic sheeting, and duct tape

    • Baby wipes

    • Garbage bags
